ABOUT OUR PARISH

Our Faith

The Episcopal Church is a member of the Anglican Communion -- derived from the Church of England and sharing with it traditions of faith and order as set forth in its Book of Common Prayer. Church traditions include attitudes that are both ancient and reformed, liberal and conservative.

We believe that the Old and New Testaments contain the essence of Christian doctrine. The Scriptures are the word of God, proclaiming that Jesus, both God and human being, is Christ the Messiah.

The Church does not control interpretation and practice. Instead, members are encouraged to use reason to explore and comprehend God's works -- to make responsible moral decisions under the guidance of Scripture and in response to sincere prayer.

Fellowship

We are deeply committed to the growth of our parish as a caring community -- constantly seeking ways to become a more friendly, caring, and receptive community as we celebrate God's everyday ministry among us.

If you are a newcomer to St. Stephen's, we invite you to sign our guest register when visiting and to attend our weekly fellowship coffee hours, immediately following the 10 am service. You may also contact the rector or the or church secretary at 734-284-8777. They will be happy to answer your questions and tell you more about our parish. We sincerely welcome your presence among us and know that God has invited you.

Worship

Our manner of worship comes out of the unique tradition of the world-wide Anglican Communion. Each Sunday we gather to hear and reflect on the Scriptures, reaffirm our beliefs, acknowledge our failures, and offer to God both the good and bad of our lives through the drama of Holy Communion.

All baptized Christians, regardless of denominational backgrounds, are welcome to receive the bread and wine of Holy Communion. All others are invited to receive a blessing at the time of communion.

The sacraments of our Church are provided as a way of helping us move through some of our most important life changes: Baptism, Confirmation, the blessing of marriage, the healing ministry, and the burial of the dead. These all represent times in our lives when the Church can be present in caring and expressive ways.

Education

The emphasis of our current program is on nurturing our children in the Christian faith. However, we are also seeking ways to enable people of all ages to explore and grow in an effective and authentic relationship with God.

Our education activities include:

Stewardship

Stewardship is the way we use all of our resources, including money, to carry on Christ's work of reconciliation in the world. Stewardship is about supporting mission and ministry, living into a vision of mission in a concrete way.

We uphold that vision through many endeavors, supporting programs such as the Samaritan Assistance Center and Project Outreach. Nationally, we pursue our mission through special appeals such as the United Thank Offering and the Combined Episcopal Services Appeal.

You can find out more about our Stewardship programs by visiting our Groups and Committees.Groups and Committees page. You can find out more about the types of volunteer opportunities available by visiting our Volunteer page.
